OUR MISSION, FORUM PURPOSE AND BROAD PRINCIPLES

Our Focus

Mission

Our focus is on strengthening the resilience of the Rotorua district in the face of climate change through:

  • reduction of greenhouse gases and the transition to clean, sustainable energy;
  • dissemination of information and raising community awareness; and
  • pursuit of actions that will build resilience throughout the community.

Forum Purpose

To raise public awareness on climate change issues and the urgent need to take action.

To investigate, support and lead effective co-ordinated action.

To network with climate change groups within the region and connect with climate change activities nationally and globally.

To maintain a close connection with the Climate Change Commission, MfE and MPI and to contribute to and monitor their progress.

To develop an understanding of and work towards reducing carbon foot prints and greenhouse gas emissions at various levels including:

the Council level (both RLC and BOPRC);

the Sector level (regionally and nationally);

local businesses;

individuals and households.

Broad Principles

Forum members agree that there is an urgent need to ensure global average temperatures are well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

Forum members accept that climate change is a result of global imbalance caused by human activity.

Science is a foundation for effective action on climate change.

Indigenous knowledge (Mātauranga-ā-Iwi) is fundamental to developing a pathway through the crisis.

The forum will take a global view but focus on how we can contribute to local decision-making processes.

The forum is politically neutral and operates without political bias.

We will only be successful in enhancing our resilience if we reach the most vulnerable and address issues of inequality.

To achieve a better future we all need to work together

To develop an understanding of and work towards reducing carbon foot prints and greenhouse gas emissions at various levels including:

the Council level (both RLC and BOPRC);

the Sector level (regionally and nationally);

local businesses;

individuals and households.
